I haven’t watched the finale of The Walking Dead yet due to feeling ill most of the week, but I’m better now and settling in to watch it. I’m eating lunch while watching it, which I have gathered from comments people have made may not be the best choice, but we’ll see.
The flashback to when they were at the prison leads me to wonder…when they were constantly taking down zombies through the fence, how was there not just a huge pile of zombie corpses around the perimeter, forming a sort of second fence? Apparently on this show, when it’s convenient, zombies are much like vampires on Buffy in that when they’re dead, they just *poof* into dust for easy cleanup.
This episode is full of hilarious comments like this one:
“I wonder if the whole thing’s legit.” – Michonne on Terminus
OF COURSE it’s not!
But then trouble comes along in the form of the terrible group Daryl’s been hanging around with. I guess it’s good that he’s with them so he can stand up for Rick now…only to be rewarded by getting his ass kicked. Hey, if doing the right thing was always easy, then everyone would do it.
This leads to the biggest HOLY SHIT moment I’ve seen on The Walking Dead in a long time, maybe ever, during which I clamped my hands over my mouth and held my breath until it was over. When Rick went zombie-style on his attacker and ripped through his carotid artery with his teeth, my respect level for Rick went up so so high. Are you ready to hear something that I know I’ve NEVER said?
Well done, Walking Dead writers. Bravo! I didn’t think there was anything that could be done to make me want something other than for Rick and Carl to just be gone already. But that move was brilliant. I’ve never been a big fan of Carl, but of course I don’t want him to be raped by some horrible pedophile. That was just awful! And seeing Rick step up and protect his family in what might possibly have been the grossest way possible was just fantastic.
“Come on, let’s see what you’ve got. What are you gonna do now, sport?” – famous last words
The look on Carl’s face during this whole sequence makes obvious that no matter how grown up he thinks he is due to the state of the world he’s been growing up in, there was still enough childhood innocence left in there for this whole event to scar him. It’s one thing to kill zombies and people that are threatening your life. It’s quite another to have a grown man on top of you, pushing your face into the dirt, and realizing he has sicker intentions than just killing you. As Carl watches Rick stab his attacker over and over again, the look in his eyes is downright chilling.
After that turn of events, I don’t have much to say about the rest of the episode. It was basically exactly what had to happen. They get to Terminus, are rightly suspicious of the place, and find out that it’s not a sanctuary, it’s a trap! Much like the snare that Rick explained to Carl and Michonne earlier in the episode, the residents of Terminus created a path for their prey to run along, right into the noose that they so carefully hid in the guise of a safe place.
I did find it hilarious that Rick’s spidey sense went into high alert over seeing the possessions of Glenn and Maggie. The riot gear and the watch I get, but the poncho? Since when is Maggie’s poncho iconic? How long has she worn the poncho that they see it and instantly think of her? I feel like I would have noticed it more if she wore it all the time, especially given how hideous it is.
When the Terminus people were directing them to the train car and giving them nicknames, I wanted SO BADLY for them to refer to Carl as the little cowboy. Ringleader, The Archer, The Samurai, and The Little Cowboy. That would have been awesome. Sadly, I was disappointed.
The episode ends with the reunion we’ve all been waiting for of Rick with Glenn and Maggie and crew, and closes out with a line that I have to believe could have been stronger.
“They’re gonna feel pretty stupid when they find out.” “Find out what?” Cue dramatic music! “They’re screwing with the wrong people.”
Really? That’s what warranted the ridiculous tense buildup of the music and everyone waiting with baited breath to hear what Rick has to say?? “They’re screwing with the wrong people”??? Not, “I lured a horde of zombies here just in case to distract them so we can escape,” or even, “I’m one badass motherfucker who ripped a guy’s artery out of his neck with my teeth like yesterday and I won’t hesitate to do it again.”? Oh well, it is The Walking Dead. They don’t have such a huge audience because of the brilliant dialogue.
I do believe Rick though, even though I think he could have said it better. They definitely are screwing with the wrong people. And I can’t wait to see what happens next season. Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in!
